Enhanced Solar Grants: Up to €9,000 for Eligible Homeowners

The enhanced SEAI Solar PV grant offers increased financial support for eligible Irish homeowners receiving qualifying social welfare payments.

Under the scheme, qualifying homeowners can receive up to €8,400 towards Solar PV installation, with an additional €600 available for eligible battery storage systems of 5 kWh or larger.

This brings the maximum combined grant support to €9,000, subject to SEAI eligibility criteria and approval.

For homeowners considering solar energy, understanding the available funding is an important first step. Equally important is identifying a Solar PV system that suits the property and the household’s electricity requirements.

EnergyServ can help homeowners explore their options and understand the system requirements before submitting a grant application.

How much funding is available?

The enhanced SEAI Solar PV grant is calculated according to the installed system capacity, with grant support capped at 4 kWp.

SEAI provides €3,350 per kWp for the first 2 kWp, followed by €850 per additional kWp up to 4 kWp.

Installation Maximum enhanced grant
2 kWp Solar PV €6,700
3 kWp Solar PV €7,550
4 kWp Solar PV €8,400
Eligible battery storage (5 kWh or larger) €600
Maximum combined grant €9,000

These figures represent the maximum available grant amounts for the specified system capacities. The actual grant awarded depends on the proposed installation, homeowner eligibility and SEAI approval.

Importantly, the 4 kWp threshold is the maximum capacity supported by the enhanced Solar PV grant, not necessarily the maximum size of the system a homeowner can install. A larger system may be appropriate depending on the property’s electricity consumption and available installation space, but the PV grant remains capped at €8,400.

Who qualifies for the enhanced Solar PV grant?

The enhanced grant is available to eligible homeowners receiving certain Department of Social Protection payments.

According to SEAI, the qualifying payments are:

  • Working Family Payment
  • Fuel Allowance under the National Fuel Scheme
  • One-Parent Family Payment
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • Carer’s Allowance, where the applicant lives with the person they care for
  • Jobseeker’s Allowance, received for more than six months, where the applicant has a child under seven years of age
  • Disability Allowance, received for more than six months, where the applicant has a child under seven years of age

Homeowners receiving one or more of these payments may qualify for the higher grant amounts, provided they meet the applicable scheme conditions.

The property must also meet the SEAI Solar PV scheme’s eligibility requirements, including:

  • Having an electricity Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN).
  • Having been built and occupied before 2025.
  • Not having previously received SEAI Solar PV grant funding at the same MPRN.

Receiving a qualifying welfare payment does not automatically guarantee grant approval. All relevant eligibility and installation requirements must be satisfied.

Why arrange a Solar PV assessment before applying?

Before submitting an SEAI Solar PV grant application, homeowners should understand which system size is appropriate for their property and whether battery storage should be included.

A professional Solar PV assessment can help establish these requirements.

An assessment considers factors such as:

  • Roof orientation, available space and shading.
  • Household electricity consumption and usage patterns.
  • Potential annual solar electricity generation.
  • Appropriate Solar PV system capacity.
  • Whether battery storage would provide additional benefits.
  • Estimated installation costs and potential savings.

This information helps the installer recommend a suitable system and provide an accurate quotation.

It also allows homeowners to make a more informed decision before applying for grant support.

Why is getting the system details right important?

SEAI specifies that grant funding is payable for the installation measures, system size, named contractor and grant amount detailed in the approved Grant Offer.

If a homeowner wishes to change the approved system size or installation type, SEAI approval must be obtained before installation work begins.

Changing the named installation company requires the existing application to be cancelled and a new application submitted before works commence.

Although a physical site survey is not a universal SEAI requirement before applying, arranging an appropriate assessment with an installer can help avoid unnecessary changes or delays.

At EnergyServ, we can discuss your property’s suitability, assess your electricity requirements and recommend an appropriate Solar PV and battery storage solution.

Can battery storage be included?

Yes. The enhanced grant provides an additional €600 towards an eligible battery storage system with a capacity of at least 5 kWh.

Battery storage allows homeowners to retain some of the surplus electricity generated by their Solar PV panels for use later in the day.

For example, when solar panels generate more electricity than the household is using, eligible surplus energy can be stored in the battery rather than immediately exported to the electricity grid.

That stored electricity can then help power the home during the evening or at other times when solar generation is lower.

Battery storage can help households make greater use of their own renewable electricity, although the benefits depend on electricity consumption, system configuration and battery capacity.

The €600 grant is subject to SEAI’s technical specifications, application conditions and approval requirements.

Homeowners installing Solar PV and battery storage together can apply for both grants through the relevant SEAI application process.

How do you apply for the enhanced grant?

The application process begins with confirming eligibility and identifying a suitable installation.

Step 1 — Check your eligibility

Confirm that you receive a qualifying Department of Social Protection payment and that your property meets the SEAI Solar PV scheme requirements.

Step 2 — Arrange a Solar PV assessment and quotation

Contact an SEAI-registered Solar PV company to discuss your property’s suitability, electricity requirements, recommended system size and battery storage options.

Step 3 — Submit your SEAI application

Apply for the appropriate Solar PV installation and eligible battery storage, where applicable, using the system details agreed with your chosen contractor.

Step 4 — Receive your SEAI Grant Offer

Wait until you have received your official Grant Offer before installation work begins. Check that the approved system details and named contractor are correct.

Step 5 — Complete the installation

Your chosen SEAI-registered Solar PV company arranges the installation and the required electrical and completion documentation.

The contractor also manages the relevant ESB Networks connection notification requirements.

Step 6 — Complete the post-works BER and documentation

A post-works Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment is required before the Solar PV grant can be paid.

The necessary completion documentation must also be submitted to SEAI.

Once grant approval has been issued, homeowners have eight months to complete the installation and submit the required documentation.

SEAI processes the grant payment once the required documents have been received and the installation meets the scheme conditions.

How is the enhanced grant different from the standard Solar PV grant?

The standard SEAI domestic Solar PV grant provides up to €1,800 towards an eligible Solar PV installation.

An additional €600 battery grant may also be available, bringing the maximum combined standard support to €2,400.

For homeowners receiving qualifying social welfare payments, the enhanced grant offers substantially higher financial support:

Grant Standard support Enhanced support
Solar PV Up to €1,800 Up to €8,400
Eligible battery storage €600 €600
Maximum combined support €2,400 €9,000

The enhanced support is specifically available to qualifying homeowners and remains subject to the relevant SEAI requirements.

Start with the right Solar PV system for your home

The enhanced SEAI grants provide an opportunity for eligible homeowners to consider Solar PV and battery storage with significantly greater financial support.

However, every property is different.

The right installation depends on the available roof space, household electricity consumption, future energy requirements and whether battery storage is appropriate.

At EnergyServ, we believe a successful solar installation begins with understanding the property and how energy is used within it.
