Solar panels generate most of their electricity in the middle of the day – when most homes are empty and using the least power. Without a battery, that surplus is exported to the grid under the Clean Export Guarantee, earning a payment per kWh that’s typically well below your import rate. A battery stores that surplus instead, so you draw down your own stored power in the evening rather than buying it back from your supplier.
Combined with a dynamic electricity tariff, a battery can also be charged from the grid during cheap overnight rate windows and discharged during expensive peak periods – a second, separate saving on top of solar self-consumption.
Being straight about this up front builds more trust than burying it: battery storage is not covered by the SEAI Solar PV Grant. What does apply to batteries: 0% VAT, provided the battery is installed under the same contract as your solar panels – a saving of roughly €800–€1,500 versus buying a battery separately at the standard 23% rate. EnergyServ structures every combined install this way by default.
