What Hardware Do You Need?

1. Smart meter with CTF score 4

You need a smart meter with a Communications Technically Feasible (CTF) score of 4 to access dynamic tariffs. Check your score via the ESB Networks app or ask your supplier. ESB Networks installs smart meters for free – if you do not have one, request an installation.

2. Battery with grid-charge capability

Your battery must support ‘force charge’ or ‘grid charging’ mode – this allows it to charge from the grid during cheap overnight windows, not just from your solar panels. Most modern hybrid inverters support this, including GivEnergy, Sigenergy, SolarEdge, Huawei, Sungrow, and Solis. Confirm with your installer that this mode is enabled. If it is not switched on, you will not benefit from overnight arbitrage.

3. Hybrid inverter

You need a hybrid inverter – not a standard string inverter with an AC-coupled battery – to charge your battery from the grid as well as from solar. Pitfalls to Watch

Dynamic tariffs are not the right choice for everyone. Before switching, be aware of the following.

 

  • Bill uncertainty. Because prices change every 30 minutes, your monthly bill will vary more than on a fixed tariff. If you are on a tight budget and need predictable outgoings, this can be uncomfortable even if your average bill is lower.
  • Peak price spikes. On cold, calm winter evenings when wind generation is low and heating demand is high, dynamic prices can spike sharply – sometimes above 55c per kWh. A battery protects you from these spikes by discharging stored energy. Without a battery, peak exposure is a real risk.
  • Higher standing charges. Some dynamic tariff plans carry higher standing charges than standard tariffs. Factor this into your calculation – a higher standing charge can eat into savings from cheaper unit rates, especially in lower-consumption months.
  • Battery cycling degradation. Cycling your battery daily for arbitrage will accumulate charge cycles faster than a solar-only strategy. Most modern lithium batteries are rated for 4,000-6,000 cycles. At one cycle per day, this represents 11-16 years of daily cycling. It is worth confirming your battery’s cycle rating and warranty with your installer before committing to an aggressive arbitrage strategy.
  • Automation is not optional. Manually checking half-hourly prices and adjusting your appliances every day is not realistic for most households. To get meaningful savings you need a smart battery with automated scheduling, a smart EV charger, or both. Without automation, savings will be modest at best.
